Today, my coaching clients are struggling universally with this continuing WFH situation. We all thought by now, we would have much more information than we have. We would know when the vaccine is available, when our places of work would open. We all knew this would not be over today but we thought we would know much more than we know.
Now we see this may go on for the foreseeable future: we are now buying real office chairs, figuring out spaces everyone can call their workplace in our homes. Of great importance, if you did not set boundaries earlier, you must now. I coach people who sit down at 6:45 am and don’t get up until 9 pm. That is not sustainable. Figure it out, make a plan, set work and life boundaries. We must assume we are in this for the long haul. Make sure you are intentional about your life, don’t just let it happen to you.
Another theme today is CHANGE and what it means to you. Should I stay at my present job or actively begin a search? It does not matter where I work now, so should I leave the city and seek a lower cost of living location? Is this a good time to be thinking like this or a bad time? This new situation has brought up many issues for all of us.
I say, now is a good time to contemplate it all. Sit down and make a list. What do you love about your present situation, personally and professionally? What is not working so well? What has been exacerbated by the world condition and might go away eventually? Talk to your trusted advisors. What do they advise? Talk, get help, ask questions, get yourself in gear!
Today calls for self-compassion. None of us have been through a pandemic and a contentious election and civil/social unrest all at the same time. These are trying times and you must give yourself a break. Everyone is figuring this out. You are not alone here.
There are no easy answers. The optimism gurus say remember to have some fun. Do things that make you happy…do you remember what those things were? Some are buying puppies, others are going back to their pianos, many are engaging in online learning they have always wanted to do, tap dancing online. Know we will get to the other side of this, have faith.
